Time to hit you with another Spotlight on one of our favorite accounts. Hailing from Long Island, New York… Special Sauce really needs no introduction!!

Special Sauce is a premier retail purveyor, with its foundation based within the skate and snowboard community since 1994. With roots deeply planted on Long Island, New York, their collective consists of likeminded individuals sharing the same philosophy, by staying on the cutting edge of the latest trends to drop, in action sports, lifestyle brands, and street culture.

Sauce just recently had the opening of their third and most highly anticipated store in the heart of Huntington Village on Main Street. (Feast your eyes…)The space will double as a showroom for pre-line releases, music listening parties, dance workshops, consultation shopping (by appointment) as well as a variety of collaborative events.

Q: If you can relive any of your craziest moments involving Special Sauce, what would it be?

A: Hmmm, let’s see- don’t know if this constitutes as the craziest moment, but we held a LIVE concert for free last June with N.E.R.D for over 500 fans at our Bayshore location parking lot. (Stay tuned you might be seeing some new sounds this summer). Surprisingly everything went smoothly- no indecent exposure or drunken arrests. Though that makes for some interesting news… Otherwise it’s usually me bursting out into and impromptu song and dance (Don’t ask )  

Q: What does Special Sauce play (in terms of music) to get it poppin’?

A: The question is what don’t we play?… 
We’ll drop anything from Bebop to Hip Hop, Classical to Nujazz and Electro Beats and Breaks. Our Sauce collective is pretty eclectic when it comes to music. Many times the day starts off with a strong dose of coffee and depending upon the mood and weather (say for instance) if its dark and raining, I’ll be inspired by the ART OF NOISE “The Seduction of Claude Debussy” album. Rakim makes a guest appearance- nuff said! 

Otherwise we’ll thrown down some mixes via Bobbito & Stretch, new lab madness from our own DJ Nick Pepe or some soulful house preferably from the UK label Defected. 

 Q: Worst pet peeve amongst shoppers?  

    A:  Inconsideration toward staff and our retail space. There’s also nothing worse than when time has been taken to fold merchandise, then someone comes along and unfolds everything in every size- for what? But then again that is to be expected at times. I think its safe to say that most of our crew have nerves of steel toward ignorance. 

Q: What is our ultimate favorite Hellz piece? 
 
A: Ultimate? I’m tickled pink that you should ask. 
That’s really a hard question though. I can tell you that my favorite staple denim by Hellz is the D. Ross style jean. They are unique in cut and fit like a dream. I made sure to stock up with extras for the future. I also love the “No Frontin” jacket from this past Holiday ‘08 collection. I rock every HB piece loud and proud! 

Q: Who do you want to touch gloves with? 

A: No boxing…That sh!t is fixed. I rather take it to the cage if I had a choice. There are to many people in political and religious power who need to get chopped the f#ck down. Don’t get me started… 

Q: When you wanna have fun how and where do you spend your time?

A: Some of our best times are spent at SPECIAL SAUCE. We have been heavily involved within the art, music and dance community for quite some time. After we close the shop we have after hours (BREAKING/HOUSE) dance practice held 3 times a week. Sauce Co-Owner (Peter Szczebak) has been doing this strong since ‘94. 

Many times our DJ’s will roll in with their equiptment and turtables with straight vinyl (no Serato) for a mixing session just for friends. 

Otherwise I personally enjoy hitting up house music events at Santos or Cielo in NYC, or unwind with good friends in South Beach or on the island of Ibiza or Germany to get away from it all. 

Q: What’s your favorite quote? 

A: I don’t know if it is much of a quote as it is a way of being: We here at Sauce  believe that if you give to others without expecting personal gain, the universe will acknowledge this as an act of selflessness, and return it back to you some point in time in your life.
