Blogger Of The Week
During my visit to New York, I got the opportunity to hang out with one of my favorite bloggers Gemma from Fade To Black.
Gemma is a designer for Rocawear on top of her blogging hobbie, and I was lucky enough to get an informal tour of the Rocawear office. Um…it was amazing. Her view was beautiful, and each room of the office had its own theme to it in which staff got the chance to create a concept as well as put it up themselves. If you haven’t already, you should add Gemma to your bloggers list to read daily…I get lost in her outfit posts sometimes. (all the time.)
Read Gemma’s interview after the jump!
What’s your name and what do you do?
I’m a fashion graphic designer for Rocawear mens as well as run Fade To Black NY, it’s a fashion blog
When did you start Fade To Black and what motivated you to create it?
I started 2 and a half months ago. I took pictures of my outfits and my fashion sketches just to get out there and meet new people.
How exactly did you get into Rocawear and the design industry?
I graduated from the University of London and straight afterwards, I got a job as a graphic illustrator and designer, and I just applied for Rocawear and had an interview….and I got the position! I first started off as a tech-packer, and gradually worked my way up to an assistant to an associate and now I’m a designer and I work with the graphic team. We do all the branding, concepts for every season, t shirt graphics, and the graphic for the rest of the line…which is fun!
What is your biggest influence when you design?
My biggest influence is probably street style, that’s how I got in to Rocawear. Like people like you! I think that’s how I really got into it, because I would look at blogs all the time and it all looked like so much fun. I used to do mini photoshoots all the time, and I would try and think of different concepts…using different cameras and different lighting, and of course different outfits.
What is your biggest influence when you get dressed in the morning?
I don’t know…I mean, I hardly wear bright colors, so my lipstick has to pop out, my nails have to pop up. Of course I get influenced by other bloggers, the Olsen twins are pretty awesome, and yea…a lot of different things. I like to shop at H&M and Forever 21 as well as vintage stores. When you go to vintage stores, you see things you don’t see anywhere else, it brings about another kind of style.
What is your favorite store to shop at?
Bakers Closet. It’s a vintage store in Brooklyn. It’s huge and they seperate everything by color. They have a massive bag section, and a massive belt section, massive fur, shoes, dresses.
Who’s your favorite designer?
Gareth Pugh. I liked him ever since I saw him on that TV show, Fashion House. It’s sort of like “Project Runway”. I liked his stuff then. I love it, it’s like everything that’s ‘in’ at the moment,he just exaggerates it.
What are your favorite trends right now?
I like the gothic look. Like Garbage Dress …she does it really well. But I also like the slouchy look. The Olsen twin look, of course…I think Fashion Toast does that . I also really love the blog Coco Rosa..I can’t wear pastels and pinks, but I think she does it really well.
What trends do you think are a no-no this season?
I think it all just depends on who you are. If you know what looks good on you, then it’s good.
